Copy this pop-up by Magic Spoon

They're crushing the keto snacks game and their email marketing.

Hey.

As the header image says, I’m a day late with this email.

I’m blaming the food poisoning (?) I thought was c - v - d for taking me out of commission all weekend as to why the email is late.

Oh well, I’m all good now.

Have you ever heard of Magic Spoon?

I first heard about this “Healthy cereal that tastes too good to be true” (that’s a great H1, by the way) because they sponsored Tim Ferriss’ podcast.

Magic Spoon's variety pack

Then, for a reason that escapes me, I Googled “keto ice cream Canada” and Magic Spoon appeared as an ad.

It’s not ice cream but it is keto — and the name was familiar to me — so I clicked.

I was greeted with this pop-up:

Good shit, eh?

And take a look at the first sentence in the fine print!

“Like our cereal, our emails contain no junk.”

Brilliant.

This is what every pop-up should aspire to be when they grow up:

  • Clear proposition: Win Free Cereal!

  • Clear description: Enter for daily chances…

  • Clear CTA: Enter The Contest

  • Clear branding: Aesthetic image of their cereal

If your pop-up says something basic like, “Sign up for our newsletter” or “Stay in touch!”, you’re doing it wrong.

Well, not wrong. But you’re not convincing me to sign-up.

Every website has an email pop-up, why should I sign-up for yours? What makes you special?

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?!

Needless to say, I signed up…and not just because I’m an email marketer and sign up for almost every website’s emails to study what they’re doing.

Immediately after signing up, I received a welcome email.

Subject line: You might be a winner...Preview text: Do you believe in magic?

This is good email marketing.

My only gripe (and it is kind of a big one) is that the email wasn’t live text. It was one giant image.

Yeah, who knows.

Don’t do that. Make your emails live text for accessibility and because no one likes emails that are one giant button.

In any case, another reason this welcome email rocked is that it was sent immediately after I signed up.

Remember: A lead will never be more interested in your brand than the second they provide their email so make sure to acknowledge that they took that step.

Here are some ideas for a welcome email:

  • Valuable PDF/white paper

  • Welcome video

  • Teach lead how to use your product/service

  • Discount/Promo code

Hell, you can just say “What’s up?” and that’d still be better than saying nothing at all.

For the record, I’m not sold on whether or not to buy the cereal.

Have you had it before? Is it good? What do flavours do you recommend?

Adios amigos,Andrew
